CCI has planted 1,000 indigenous trees in Zululand, the first step in creating a CCI Forest. The trees were planted at Loziba Wildlife Reserve, supporting job creation, conservation of our environment and encouraging reforestation. In addition to the environmental impact, this project will also be creating employment for 10 previously disadvantaged young people (70% of whom are female). As such this project contributes to 7 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The tree planting project was undertaken in partnership with Amanzi Ethu (an NGO focused on improving water quality) and Project Rhino who are developing the wildlife reserve in partnership with the local community. The reforestation site is situated within Loziba Wildlife Reserve, a new rewilding project partnership with communal and private land at Gluckstadt in the Abaqalusi and Ulundi districts. The reserve is one of sheer beauty and is proposed to be a new Big 5 Tourism product in the future. More broadly the project is in line with climate restoration, job creation, water and environmental sustainability. It is a solution that looks at job creation on a large scale in every community, the restoration of our catchments, public-private partnerships, and data gathering on river health and basic services for the benefit of civil society.
